Teaching Literature
More about Ms. Tetlow
I started by educational career in my hometown of Cinnaminson, New Jersey. There I was able to discover myself as a reader as well as a writer, and I was able to meet some of the most amazing and influential people in my life. Studying afterwards at Burlington County College, I was able to further my understanding of literature and also pursue my dream college. The College of New Jersey was the institution I knew I wanted to be a part of since I was a freshman in high school, and being able to transfer there was one of the most successful moments in my educational career.
Teaching literature has been something I have always wanted to do. It allows me to show my passion for works and hopefully inspire others to become passionate as well. Though I know literature may not be for everyone, I aspire to have an open, engaging, and diverse classroom that will be beneficial and exciting for all students.
Junior Field Experience
I have been fortunate enough to have taught during my Junior Field Experience in Trenton Central West High School, where I was able to teach 11th Grade American Literature for two weeks. During my time at Trenton Central West High School, I was able to share a few interesting and dense texts by Edgar Allan Poe while also allowing the students to have a personal experience with the genre of Dark Romanticism. Though my time was short there, we were able to experience horrific and well written tales of death and consequences through personal readings as well as group discussions.
Projects
Please take a look at the projects I have done so far in my teaching career! I hope by seeing these you can see what kind of teacher I am becoming.
Understanding By Design
A Theoretical Unit on Slaughterhouse-Five
This unit starts off with a background on Kurt Vonnegut. Stage One consists of unit goals, understandings, and the end results for students. Stage Two describes the different kinds of assessments students would be asked to do during the unit. Stage Three illustrates the before, during, and after reading strategies.
Graphic Novel Project
Reviews, Book Talks, and Examples of Young Adult Graphic Novels
For this project, I researched some interesting and diverse graphic novels for Young Readers and explore the genre as a whole. Including some personal and professional reviews, as well as the basics of Graphic Novels, this project encompasses what interests me as a reader and what I could use within my own classroom.
Electronic Portfolio
A Deeper Look at Myself as a Writer
This portfolio is a snapshot of my own writing, including my personal writer's notebook, analyses of the techniques and skills of my writing, and my background as a writer. Though reading is a powerful and fulfilling experience, writing can enhance that experience while also developing creative communication skills. Please enjoy a closer look at who I am through my personal works!
Student Teaching Experience
I also had the pleasure to teach at Crossroads Middle School South in South Brunswick for my senior year student teaching experience. I taught 5 classes made up of 125 wonderful 6th grade students from January to May of 2017. Throughout that time, our classes completed an entire unit on Louis Lowry's novel Gathering Blue where we explored themes of community, personal strength, and exploration. Our final formal assessment focused on creative differentiation as well as practicing formal writing in the form of project stations. My time there was extremely fun, challenging, and very informative.
